Construction of the tallest skyscraper in northeast downtown got underway over the weekend.
The 280-meter and 250-meter twin towers of The Springs in Xinjiangwancheng, Yangpu District, are expected to be completed around 2025.
The buildings will contain offices, shops, restaurants, a theater and a Mirage Hotel. Its will be connected with Sanmen Road Station on Metro lines 10 and 20.
Each of the towers has a terrace, built in the middle of the buildings, that looks from outside like a crack.
A hanging garden on the top of the 280-meter-tall building will be surrounded by a glass curtain wall for employees and visitors to relax and enjoy the view.
The buildings will be the core of The Springs complex, a development by US commercial real estate company Tishman Speyer. The largest commercial site in Xinjiangwancheng will include offices and hotels along with cultural, commercial and entertainment facilities.
Yangpu will come up with preferential policies to attract international businesses to the complex. Multinational enterprises Nike, Continental AG and Henkel are already based there.
The 280-meter skyscraper will be the sixth tallest in the city with the tallest being the 632-meter Shanghai Tower,.
Near the project, a pentagon-shaped skywalk will be completed this year at the busy intersection of Songhu, Zhayin and Sanmen roads.
