Shanghai Animation Film Studio, the oldest in China with the largest output, could be the inspiration of an entire animation hub in downtown Shanghai, a deputy to Shanghai People’s Congress suggested.

Wanhangdu Road in Jing’an and Changning districts, where the 63-year-old company has been located since its inception, could be Shanghai’s Akihabara, said film director Su Da, referring to the famous animation district in Tokyo.

Some industry parks themed on the animation and game industries in the city have gathered companies which produce animation and game products, while the entire animation industry includes a wide range of products, including fashion, cosmetics, toys, food and theater, Su said.

Su suggested that the area around the studio be established as a free-trade zone for animation-related companies, with bus stations, walls, pedestrian walks and litter bins redesigned in the animation spirit, and new cinemas, theaters, restaurants, bars and shops in the same style.

She also suggested that the area be designated for animation film premieres, product launches, eSports, art shows and cosplay parties.
