Used face masks require proper sorting, say health authorities

Used medical-style face masks should be disposed of properly based on the circumstances in which they were used, Shanghai's greenery and health authorities said.

Masks used at medical treatment facilities should be disposed into containers for medical waste, which will be handled by professional agencies.

People suspected of having an infectious disease should give their used masks to staff at medical treatment centers, and these masks will be treated as medical waste.

Masks worn for daily use belong in the dry waste category, and should be disposed into containers for dry trash, the Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau said.
