Mayor urges strictest prevention measures
Shanghai Mayor Ying Yong has urged the most stringent measures to prevent the spread of infection linked to a new strain of coronavirus.
Strict health screenings must be conducted at all road, air and water entrances to Shanghai, he said. Patients must receive enhanced treatment in isolation and all large public activities must be suspended, Ying told a coronavirus prevention meeting on Friday.
Shanghai announced its highest-level response mechanism for major public health emergencies at the meeting.
Ying also urged local hospitals' fever clinics to enhance isolation and prevention measures.
So far, Shanghai has reported 20 coronavirus cases.
The first confirmed case of coronavirus-related pneumonia in Shanghai was discharged from hospital on Friday.
