From 2pm on Monday, all people who enter Shanghai via expressway will have their temperatures measured at police checkpoints established at the city's borders, local police announced.

At nine police checkpoints — located on the G2, G15, G60, S36, G50, S26, S32 and G40 expressways — all vehicles entering Shanghai will be subject to compulsory checks.

The city’s transportation and health authorities, along with local police, previously began to check people coming from key areas of the latest pneumonia epidemic at road entrances into Shanghai from January 23.

Police officers are in charge of stopping vehicles and maintaining order, while health workers will check the temperatures of people in their cars.

Those found with fever will be taken to the hospital for treatment, and those coming from key areas will be tracked during their stay in Shanghai, police said.

At busy intersections, police will engage more health workers so as to make the screenings more efficient and relieve traffic pressure.

Police caution that this measure could create intense congestion on expressway entrances into Shanghai, especially as people return to the city at the end of the Spring Festival holiday.

Drivers who are returning to Shanghai are thus advised to avoid busy expressways during peak hours.
