Metro passengers suspected of having coronavirus-related pneumonia will be taken to a separate space within stations before medical workers arrive, Shanghai Metro said on Monday.

After they are taken to hospital, the “separation space” and public space within the station in question as well as the air-conditioning system will be disinfected, and if necessary, some entrances and service facilities closed to passengers, the company said.

Shanghai Metro said measures against the spread of the virus have been stepped up.

All 449 toilets within Metro stations and 792 security check machines will be cleaned and disinfected once an hour.

Railings, seats, elevators, turnstiles, customer service counters, waiting rooms and shops will be disinfected at least two times a day, and stations near hospitals, traffic junctions and tourist sites will be disinfected at least four times a day.
