Shanghai's government are now recommending residents, who are mostly staying locked indoors under the current threat of coronavirus, sanitize our homes regularly to add another layer of protection against the virus.

In the above short video I'll show you how you can use common household bleach to disinfect surfaces in your home and keep yourself and your loved ones safe.

Important note: Always use gloves and a mask when using bleach, and ensure the space is well ventilated.

How to sanitize your home

  1. In a bucket, add about three liters (around a gallon) of cold water. It's important to use cold water since heat can reduce the effectiveness of bleach.
  2. It's a good idea to ensure children and pets are in another room.
  3. Put on gloves and a mask and ensure your windows are open and the space is well ventilated.
  4. Pour about 1/4 of a cup of bleach into the water and stir well.
  5. Use a rag soaked in the bleach water to wipe down all surfaces, paying particular attention to things people regularly touch, like handles, switches and appliances.
  6. Try not to squeeze too much of the water from your rag, since leaving surfaces slightly wet means the bleach has longer to act.
  7. Dispose of the water carefully after use. You could tip it in your toilet and leave it soaking for twenty minutes for a bonus clean.
