Shanghai Mayor Ying Yong visited a number of local markets on Thursday to ensure food and other daily necessities are in abundant supply for the city's residents.

Ying said ensuring the supply of daily necessities is not only closely connected to the city's normal operations but also people's lives. So the city government should give equal high attention to both epidemic prevention and the control and the supply of food and daily necessities.

The government should make all efforts to organize suppliers and set several policies to enhance supply to make sure local markets had abundant resources, stable prices and good order.

At 10am, Ying and Deputy Mayor Xu Kunlin visited CenturyMart’s Longming outlet and checked the prices of vegetables and meat. Ying asked the owner about the supply, sources and if daily supplies could last into the evening.

The owner said the supply of vegetables was increasing and they were still available for customers even they came in at night.

Ying said it is important to organize sources in various ways and channels, expand the size of local vegetable planting as well as taking advantage of some vegetable fields outside the city, and improve the city's food supply chains.

He also checked the prices of products increasingly in demand, such as disinfectant, instant noodles and frozen dumplings and asked about their supply.

Since a great number of residents are ordering products online or via mobile apps, the government leaders also went to Freshippo's Daning outlet.

Staff there check the temperatures of each customer at the entrance and ask them to wear a mask before entering. A staff member said Freshippo is trying its best to overcome all the difficulties and ensure its supply as well as keeping prices stable.

Ying asked leading companies to take social responsibility on their own initiative and use innovative methods to ensure supply and steady prices.

Their third stop was a vegetable market in Jing'an District. There, Ying asked a resident if there was enough of a variety of food and if prices had risen. She said she had being staying at home for several days and it was the first day she’d been out to buy food during the holiday. She found a rich variety of food in this market and reasonable prices.

Ying expressed his gratitude to local residents who understood and supported the city's actions in epidemic prevention and control. He asked market owners to never stop their supply and enable the residents to buy fresh, safe and cheap food every day. Meanwhile, ventilation and sterilization should also be applied to provide a clean and secure environment for residents doing their shopping.
