Nine local Metro stations will start checking passengers’ temperatures from Monday and the measure will be expanded to other stations soon.

The first checkpoints have been set up at local transport hubs including at Shanghai Railway Station, Shanghai South Railway Station and Hongqiao international airport.

The checkpoints are integrated with existing security checks.

Temperature censors will soon be replaced by more efficient infrared detectors, said Shao Weizhong, vice president of the Shanghai Shentong Metro Group.

"The measure is an attempt to cope with the upcoming travel peak for returning travelers," Shao told a press conference. "Passengers are required to cooperate with staff."

The travel peak for returning travelers will start next week.

Temperature checks will be expanded to other large interchange stations and those near transport hubs and hospitals. All passengers must wear masks. Police will be called if anyone refuses to cooperate.

Each train and station are disinfected every day. The trains running during the morning rush must have additional cleaning before the evening rush.

Frequent disinfections take place at security checks, tickets dispensers and other facilities.
