Disposable medical masks can be reused if wrapped with plastic film and heated by an electric hair dryer for 30 minutes. The anti-virus function of masks won’t be affected by this treatment, according to research from experts at Fudan University.

The discovery was published in the Journal of Microbes and Infection.

The research was initiated by scientist Wen Yumei as China confronts a massive shortage of face masks due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Wen said that the research can help ordinary people cope with dwindling mask supplies, but mask reuse is not recommended for medical staff or frontline professionals.
