Kangqiao Town in the Pudong New Area is using “smart” monitoring tools to ensure public health.

The township government has developed and added a new function to its “City Brain” urban management system, backed by big data and artificial intelligence.

Cameras and sensors installed in the area capture images at the entrances of offices and factories, residential compounds and public spaces. When people from key areas of the coronavirus outbreak, including the hardest-hit Wuhan, are seen neighborhood committee officials can scan a QR code to file a report with the system.

Also, the system can track the whereabouts of people returning from key areas and the health information of people staying at home under quarantine. It can detect the presence of large crowds too.

The system can help different neighborhoods and authorities receive timely updates, and facilitate joint efforts against the coronavirus, according to Yao Weiqing, director of the system.

On February 6 and 7, just ahead of the resumption of work, the system detected a substantial increase in migrants at one large company which employs 55,000 workers. It alerted the township’s coronavirus prevention office, and officials carried out a thorough inspection.
