Online tours bring Shanghai history home

City residents stuck at home can now take tours into hundreds of historical buildings with a few simple clicks thanks to cultural and tourism authorities.

Online tours of Shanghai's historical buildings have been launched by the city's cultural and tourism authorities, allowing people staying at home to enjoy the architecture with simple clicks, the Shanghai Culture and Tourism Administration announced on Friday.

Jing'an District is using virtual reality panoramic maps to allow online browsers to walk into 222 historical buildings such as Moller Villa and the former residence of industrial tycoon Rong Zongjing.

They can also follow 15 walking tour routes of the district’s historical buildings.

Changning District tells the stories behind 21 historical buildings in both English and Chinese online.

Xuhui District is telling the stories behind 30 roads and 129 historical buildings in the Hengfu (Hengshan-Fuxing Road) Historical Conservation Zone.

Online tours into 139 historical buildings via virtual reality technology are offered by Yangpu District, involving power, water and gas plants and 10 museums.

The Pudong New Area, Putuo, Minhang and Songjiang districts are also providing online tours.
