Police and market inspectors raid the gang's wrokshop on Friday.

Six suspects were caught on Friday for allegedly producing counterfeit face masks of known brands, Shanghai police said on Saturday.

Police and market inspectors raided the gang’s underground factory in Songjiang District where they discovered over 100,000 counterfeit masks whose authentic counterparts are estimated to be worth over 1 million yuan (US$143,000).

Police said they started their investigation after finding that a shop on the Internet was probably selling counterfeit masks.

The suspects allegedly sold the masks as “anti-virus medical masks” at 10 to 26.8 yuan each on the Internet.

Investigation is still underway.
