Virus press conferences interpreted for the hearing-impaired
For the first time, a sign language interpreter appeared on Saturday afternoon at the daily Shanghai press conference on coronavirus control to help the hearing-impaired.
“We’ve learned from some hearing-impaired people that they had difficulties in getting information and wished to see sign language interpretation on TV,” said Sun Xianzhong with Shanghai Disabled Persons’ Federation. “Six volunteers will interpret the daily press conference in turn.”
The first volunteer was Zhang Lijun, who also interprets the 30-minute midday news program for Dragon TV.
Zhang said she and other volunteers had meetings and consulted sign language experts to translate the medical terms.
