Shanghai has no asymptomatic cases of COVID-19 under medical observation at present, the local health commission said on Wednesday.

The city is now reporting updates on asymptomatic cases daily based upon requirements from the National Health Commission, Zheng Jin, a spokeswoman for the Shanghai Health Commission, told a press conference.

There have been 11 passengers arriving in Shanghai from overseas whose nucleic acid test results were positive, yet who showed no obvious symptoms, said Zheng.

They were sent to designated fever clinics for quarantine and medical observation, said Zheng.

One was eliminated as a confirmed case while the rest developed clinical symptoms and were confirmed as infected based on epidemiology history, laboratory tests and imaging examination, said Zheng.

"Strict prevention and control measures have been imposed on such cases, including transferring them to designated clinics for medical observation and to designated medical treatment institutions immediately for quarantine and treatment if they are confirmed as infected," Zheng told the press conference.

"Asymptomatic cases will be discharged from hospital only when their nucleic acid test results are negative twice," she said. "They are required to undergo a 14-day quarantine and medical observation after being discharged from hospital.

"They will be visited by medical workers on the second and fourth week after being discharged from hospital for subsequent medical checks," she added.

"Screening on close contacts of asymptomatic cases will be enhanced and monitoring on people from key countries and venues will be strengthened," she said.
