Dr Ran Zhihua from Renji Hospital share Chinese doctors' experiences on coronavirus prevention and control, and gives suggestions on IBD patients management at an Internet conference.

A Shanghai doctor has shared his expertise in coronavirus prevention and control, and has also given suggestions for the management of patients with inflammatory bowel disease during the pandemic with international counterparts.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease, or IBD, is a broad term for conditions characterized by chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. The two most common IBDs are ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease.

Dr Ran Zhihua, from Shanghai’s Renji Hospital, was invited to participate in IBD Scope, an international conference on IBD, to share Chinese medical experience of the pandemic. About 2,500 experts in digestive diseases from 69 countries and regions participated in the Internet conference.

Ran said doctors must include some features of coronavirus treatment in IBD patient management, as the S protein on coronavirus can connect with ACE2 of human cells. ACE2 usually has a high expression in the intestinal system.

"We must arouse awareness of the effects of coronavirus during IBD patient treatment and management," he said.
