Shanghai Botanical Garden has been turned into a sea of flowers, adding a splash of color to the city's spring.

The Shanghai International Flower Show opened at the botanical garden in Xuhui District on Saturday.

The annual event, originally scheduled to open on March 28 but delayed because of the novel coronavirus epidemic, is now in its 14th year. It is the biggest comprehensive horticultural show in Shanghai and attracts several million visitors.

Covering 40 hectares this year, it features diversified flowers such as hydrangeas, azalea, iris and roses and has four display areas.

Lupins and hydrangeas are the theme flowers for the event this year.

Some 20,000 lupins and 1,000 hydrangeas of more than 80 varieties are on display, blanketing the garden in blue purple and pink purple.

Thirteen courtyard landscapes prepared by seven international designers and 10 domestic horticulture companies are also part of the show. Highlights include a classic Jiangnan-style garden and European-style countryside garden.

A Chinese herbal plant exhibition, an orchid exhibition and a Chinese rose exhibition are also on show.

Webcasts will broadcast the exhibitions, which will run through May 24.

A reservation system for entry will be in place to keep the number of visitors to below 20,000 daily to prevent social gathering amid the coronavirus pandemic. Visitors are required to present their health QR code.

Cloud appreciation and online forums will be hosted.
