The recruitment of 1,000 social workers began in the city on Tuesday, targeting university graduates, the Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau announced.

The positions will be at the grassroots and related to community service and management with social workers working at neighborhood committees, community affairs service centers and community-based cultural activity centers, the bureau said.

The recruitment drive, hosted by the bureau, Shanghai’s human resources and social security bureau and Shanghai Education Commission, will run through mid-August.

Social workers working at communities are required to have capability in tackling contradictions, crisis management, new media use and property management, the bureau said.

Shanghai has registered 52,000 community-based social workers with an average age of 39. They have played an important role in the prevention of coronavirus outbreak at communities, garbage sorting, environment treatment, banning firecrackers and Chinese International Import Expo security, the bureau said.
