Construction has begun on a liver and urological surgery clinical diagnosis and treatment center at Renji Hospital.

Upon completion, the center will have a large hospital section and intensive care unit for children receiving liver transplants.

With a helicopter apron and green channel for air transport, the new medical section is expected to enhance critical patient transplant and emergency treatment in the Yangtze River Delta region, according to Renji Hospital affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine.

As a leading organ transplant center, Renji Hospital has been ranked No. 1 in "liver transplant quantity" in the nation since 2011. The quantity of children’s liver transplants have ranked first in the world over the past seven years.

To better improve its comprehensive capability, the hospital applied to build the new liver and urological surgery center, which will carry out clinical treatment, staff training and scientific research.

The new center will have 250 beds for children’s liver transplant, adult liver transplant and other liver surgery. It will be the largest children’s liver transplant center in the nation upon completion.

A day-surgery center covering nearly 5,000 square meters will be established for the urology department to provide patients with international standard treatment.

During the current novel coronavirus epidemic, the center has added 100 beds in the intensive care unit with five separate wards with negative pressure, and nine single rooms for infection disease prevention and control.

The new center is expected to be complete by September, 2023.
