A woman is rescued from the Huangpu River.

A woman was pulled from the Huangpu River after a security guard patrolling the Xuhui riverside discovered a bag with an empty wine bottle inside it and reported it to the police, Shanghai police said on Thursday.

The incident took place on the afternoon of May 29.

The guard summoned help at 11:25am, and police soon found a woman who had fallen into the river about half an hour earlier. She was discovered on a rock under a wharf, about 30 meters from where she fell into the river, and was still alive.

However, since the woman was in a deep spot in the river and the tides were rising, police boats couldn’t reach her.

The police contacted the maritime bureau for help, and the salvage workers from the bureau arrived and rescued her.

The woman was drunk. After she got sober, police contacted her family and got her home.

Police say they have saved 39 people from the water in the first five months of this year.
