The current plum rain season is creating higher risks of cardiovascular problems and medical experts are urging caution among patients.

“The hot and stuffy weather can worsen the condition of people with heart disease and hypertension, and cause an outburst,” said Dr Song He, a cardiologist from Shanghai Yodak Cardio-Thoracic Hospital. “We receive an increasing number of patients who feel sick during the plum rain season. Most of them have a history of hypertension, coronary disease and arrhythmia.”

She said people with cardiovascular conditions must take their medicines regularly and take emergency medications with them when going outside.

High humidity, low air pressure and changing temperatures can elevate blood pressure and blood viscosity, increasing the risk of cardiovascular events like myocardial infarction and even cardiac arrest.
