Micro renovations make a big difference in old communities
The recent virus crisis has drawn our attention to health and exercise. For those living in crowded old communities, it used to be hard to find exercise space. But things have changed in the past several years and local governments have introduced micro-renovation projects to help upgrade the living standards in communities. Shanghai Daily photographer Jiang Xiaowei checked some of them out.
Nanmatou Road Community Sports Park
Hiding in a crowded old residential area, the park at 601 Pusan Road opened to the public last year and includes a basketball court, ping-pong tables, walkways and many other exercising facilities.
Siping Community
The 2.75-square-kilometer community used to be a residential area for state-owned company workers in the 1980s. With a large population, public space in the area is scarce. Since 2015, with the help of designers from Tongji University, the government has built several public facilities in small lanes with less traffic.

The complex, with two buildings and 68 apartments, once had no space for public activities. The government has upgraded an abandoned site of 100 square meters into a small playground for kids.
