Smart solution assists flood prevention at Pudong airport

Intelligent sensors have been installed across the Pudong International Airport to improve flood prevention measures and make them more reliable.
The airport is sited near the mouth of Yangtze River, with a large offshore space for flight operations. As a result it is vulnerable to typhoons and storms, especially during the city's ongoing flooding season.
The Smart Anti-flood System was launched at the airport over the weekend. It can measure the amount of rainwater, send alerts and dispatch personnel and flood-prevention materials automatically.
Five remote meteorological terminals have been built across the airport covering 60 square kilometers. The terminals can provide important weather information and send flood alerts in blue, yellow, orange and red codes.
Electronic gauges have also been installed at the airport waterways, runways and key roads to measure accumulated water. Based on the 4G network, the data will be sent to the smart system in real time. The gauges are also connected to dams at the airport to release water if necessary.
"The airport authority used to rely on phones for flood prevention measures," an official with the Pudong airport said.
With the new system, commanders can acquire information and send orders more quickly, the official said.
A video system has also been launched at the airport to offer more convenient and prompt communication between the headquarters and front-line staff, the airport authority said.
In future, anti-flood staff, vehicles and equipment will also be linked to the smart system to further enhance the airport's flood prevention capability.
