A self-service lighter exchange machine has been installed at the Pudong airport. The machine is now in trial operation.

Arriving passengers at the Shanghai Pudong International Airport can get a recycled lighter if they’ve disposed of one prior to their departure. The offer is part of a trial program meant to reduce waste.

Passengers are forbidden to carry or check-in cigarette lighters or matches onboard flights according to regulations of the Civil Aviation Administration of China. This means that smokers and other people with lighters must discard them along with other banned items before receiving a pre-boarding security check.

Many passengers have complained about needing to buy another lighter when they arrived at the airport, according to the airport authority.

A self-service machine has been installed at the T1 terminal of the Pudong airport on a test basis. After abandoning their lighters at Gate 4 or the No. 4-7 security channels at the T1 terminal, passengers will receive a QR code on their mobile phone.

Upon arrival, they can use the code to claim a free lighter from those abandoned by other departing travelers.

Passengers receive a QR code to get another lighter when they discard their own.

The machine has been equipped with a smart temperature and air-monitoring system to ensure the safety of passengers’ lighters, the airport authority said.

If the service proves to be popular, it will be promoted to the T2 terminal of the airport. Through cooperation with other airports, travelers are expected to get free recyclable lighters at other airports too, according to the authority.

The Pudong airport has launched a series of anti-COVID-19 measures on a regular basis amid the pandemic. A security check service table has been set up to help travelers and disinfect the equipment for every passenger. Glass panels have been installed to reduce contact between the certificate check staff and passengers. A disposable foot pad has been prepared for those who need to take off their shoes for the security check, according to the airport.
