Local theater troupes set to take the stage

The Shanghai Center of Chinese Operas is to display the fruits of summer training with performances at Shanghai Grand Theater from August 22 to 25.

Young performers from the six local theater troupes will show their acting and vocal talents in excerpts from Peking, Kunqu, Huju, Yueju, Huaiju operas and Pingtan.

Their repertoire will include martial arts play “Yandang Mountain,” historical drama “Generals of the Yang Family” and tragedy “Yang Naiwu and Xiao Baicai.”

Gu Haohao, an official with the Shanghai center, said it attached great importance to the cultivation of young artists and summer training had become a long-time tradition for local troupes.

“Many celebrated artists volunteered to give lectures to the young performers,” Gu said. “It is a good chance for the young people to practice and improve.”
