Nine cases of imported dengue fever have been reported in the city this year as of last week.

Although the figure is much lower than the same period  last year, the health authority is urging local residents to take proper prevention and control measures.

According to the World Health Organization, dengue fever is one of the fastest emerging infections, and is currently the most rapidly spreading viral disease known, with Thailand, Laos, the Philippines and Singapore hard hit.

The number of cases in the western Pacific Region has more than doubled over the past 10 years. Furthermore, Singapore is reporting the most serious dengue fever epidemic in history this year.

Summer is the peak season for mosquitoes which spread dengue. There is no vaccine or medicine for dengue, with self protection the best defence.

The Shanghai Health Promotion Center said it is important to clear all standing water around the home to eliminate potential breeding areas for mosquitoes. Mosquito nets and screens on windows are recommended at home. Outside, people should wear long pants and long sleeved shirts, and use insect repellent. People should also avoid staying in the shade of wet tree or grass for extended periods.

People should seek medical advice if they have symptoms like fever, headache, joint pain and rashes after visiting places with dengue fever epidemic.

The city reported a total of 107 dengue fever cases, all imported, last year, 71 more than the previous year.
