New traffic cameras with softer light are being installed around Shanghai.

To catch nighttime traffic offenders, police use LED lights to illuminate Shanghai's streets. These harsh bulbs, however, aren't friendly to the eyes.

Shanghai traffic police announced on Tuesday, that they've developed a new camera that can operate in much lower light. The new camera has softer LEDs and also uses image-enhancing technology to operate at night, police said.

So far, the new cameras have replaced older ones at five locations around the city, and the results are satisfactory, according to police.

Authorities say they plan to replace 360 cameras with bright external lights by the end of October, with more to be replaced afterward.
