The Shanghai Association of Volunteers has written to all volunteers of the city calling on them to become role models to others in preventing food waste.

The city government launched its campaign against food waste earlier this week.

The volunteers are urged to spread the word to their families, friends and colleagues, stop people who waste food, and take the initiative in organizing social events to promote the idea of saving food.

Currently there are over 4.8 million registered volunteers in the city, or one in five Shanghai residents, and over 25,000 volunteer organizations in the city.
