A team from Shanghai-based Fudan University has won the 2020 Shanghai Cross-Strait Youth Entrepreneurship Competition with a smart security guard system.

The system, with millimeter-wave phased-array radar, high-definition video and infrared sensors, can accurately detect risks around the clock in complicated environment even in rain and fog. It can be used in airports, ports, on oil wells, oil fields and other places.

The team were awarded 200,000 yuan (US$29,140), and if they establish their start-up in Jinshan District, they will win another 500,000 yuan of subsidies.

The competition was the fifth of its kind organized by the Shanghai Association of Taiwan Investment Enterprises, the Shanghai Technology Innovation Center and other parties.

Due to the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic, participants in this year’s competition showcased their programs online, with the final  carried out via video conference for competitors on the Chinese mainland and in Taiwan. 

The organizers received a total of 531 programs this year, setting a historical high at a 43 percent increase from last year. Twenty made it to the final. Other winners of the competition also won bonuses ranging from 10,000 to 80,000 yuan.
