Local hospitals are opening their doors to the public, who can visit laboratories, operating rooms and different departments, during a weeklong health education event.

Many youngsters who have taken part in a visit say they now want to become doctors.

A medical experience activity at Ruijin Hospital on Saturday allowed high school and university students to visit surgery rooms, don protective wear, and meet medical staff fighting the novel coronavirus epidemic.

Ruijin Hospital specially designed the activity so students could meet staff who had gone to Wuhan, the then epicenter of the epidemic.

Students went to a fever clinic to put on protective wear.

“It is so tiring to wear the outfit while working,” said a student surnamed Xia. “I want to be a doctor because I want to learn more about the secrets of the human body. The coronavirus epidemic further strengthens my determination."

Chen Erzhen, vice president of Ruijin Hospital, said the activity allows the public to have a better understanding of the hospital.

"We specially chose departments related to the epidemic to allow the public to know the mission and responsibility of medical staff,  as well as boost understanding between the public and the hospital," Chen said. "We also want more young people to learn about medicine."

In Zhongshan Hospital, many primary school students visited the hospital with their parents.

They had a round tour of the hospital, listened to an interesting lecture about blood and a speech from a patient, who has lymphoma but bravely fights the disease and shares her own story online to cheer up herself and encourage other patients. She also released a book about her experience during the activity on Saturday.
