Shanghai's philanthropic organizations have received more than 1.8 billion yuan (US$264 million) from the public in donations for the prevention and control of the COVID-19 pandemic as of August, including over 76 million yuan from overseas, Shanghai's civil affairs authorities announced on Saturday night during a philanthropic gala.

Donations totaled 1.875 billion yuan as of August 31, with 1.826 billion yuan spent, according to the Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau. 

The city had registered 17,197 social organizations by the end of August.

It had registered 4.35 million volunteers with a combined service time of 357 million hours last year, and more than 24,000 volunteer service teams. 

Dozens of organizations and projects were honored on Saturday night at the city's annual philanthropic gala.

The Shanghai Fudan University Education Development Foundation, Shanghai United Foundation and Pudong New Area Social Work Association were among the 10 philanthropic organizations recognized. 

The memorial hall of the site of the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China and the East China University of Political Science and Law Education Development Foundation were honored for their "cloud exhibition" and assistance fund against the pandemic among the 10 best public welfare projects, according to the bureau.

Huashan Hospital and Shanghai Center for Disease Control and Prevention were honored among the 10 philanthropic bases in the city.
