A Miniso nail polish, a popular retailer of budget household and consumer goods, has been found to contain an alert level of a banned substance, the city's drug watchdog has revealed.

It had 589 milligrams of chloroform per gram, more than 1,400 times the national standard, which is 0.4 milligrams per gram, according to the Shanghai Drug Administration.

The nail polish was bought from the Pinli Department Store in Jing'an District.

The company applied for a double check.

Chloroform causes harm to the heart, liver and kidney, and is carcinogenic.

The administration has ordered the retailer to take substandard products off shelves and enhance quality management.

An investigation is underway.
