Traffic runs smoothly at the exit of the Yangtze River Tunnel.

Shanghai saw more vehicles on expressways during this year’s National Day holiday, with a total of 10.45 million, 5 percent more than last year.

By Thursday afternoon, the number of small passenger car had reached 9 million, slightly more than last year, according to the transportation commission.

About 2.25 million foreign vehicles visited the city while 2.13 million had traveled to nearby provinces, both numbers down on last year.

Traffic on elevated roads shrunk 2 percent to a total of 13 million vehicles.

Police reported little congestion as at the beginning of the holiday, as travelers tended to return at different times on different days.

Police in the Pudong New Area intensified patrols and traffic control at key areas such as the entrance to the Yangtze River Tunnel and toll booths on the G1503.

Another 200 parking spaces were added at service centers near the Shanghai-Kunming Expressway to avoid congestion.

To cope with the returning crowds, the transportation commission center has taken emergency measures including extra bus lines, taxis and extended operation hours of Metro lines 2 and 10.

Passengers heading to Xinzhuang and Jing’an Temple can take the special bus lines at the pickup spots of the West Hongqiao Transportation Hub, which will be operating until 2:30am on Friday.

The operating hours of Metro Line 2 will be extended to 1:15am on Friday, while Line 10 will be running to 11:30pm of Thursday.
