A new type of lotus flower cultivated by the Shanghai Chenshan Botanical Garden will appear in the lotus section of the 10th China Flower Expo, which will take place in Chongming District between May 21 and July 2.

The flower, a hybrid of two lotus breeds — Perry and Dan Sajin — was named "Bo Ai Lian" (Universal Love Lotus) jointly by the Shanghai Committee of the Revolutionary Committee of the Chinese Kuomintang (RCCK), one of China's eight non-communist political parties, the Shanghai Academy of Sun Yat-sen Studies and the botanical garden in memory of Chinese revolutionary leader Sun Yat-sen.

According to Xing Jianliang, deputy director of the Standing Committee of Chongming District People's Congress, the planting of "Bo Ai Lian" is a show of support for the flower expo and Chongming from the party and the China Flower Association's lotus branch.

Wang Huimin, vice director of the RCCK's Shanghai Committee, said universal love is an important idea and lifetime spirit of Sun Yat-sen.

"We named it 'Bo Ai Lian' and are promoting it to spread the stories of Sun Yat-sen, and inherit his spirit of universal love through the flower he loved," Wang said. "Meanwhile, its place in the flower expo is a response to local residents' concerns and demands related to the city's 'flower culture,' as well as a way to provide more historical and cultural content to the expo.", which will take place in Chongming District between May 21 and July 2.
