The carrier formation led by China's first aircraft carrier, Liaoning, has initially developed combat capabilities for group operations, a Chinese military spokesperson said on Thursday.

The aircraft carrier has conducted comprehensive exercises, including combat training in high seas, in an orderly manner in accordance with established plans after being put into service, Ren Guoqiang, spokesperson of the Ministry of National Defense, said at a press conference.

The carrier formation's comprehensive system of offense and defense has been effectively tested, said Ren.

"The carrier group's exercises have been deepened and expanded into high seas. The formation has initially developed system combat capabilities," Ren said.

Liaoning, a refitted Soviet Union-made carrier, was put into commission in the Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy in 2012.

J-15 jets have undertaken successful takeoffs and landings on Liaoning at night, said Ren.
