HK Chief Executive: Meng Wanzhou issued HKSAR passport as per law
Huawei’s chief financial officer holds only one valid passport of China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor said on Tuesday.
Meng Wanzhou, chief financial officer of China's Huawei Technologies Co Ltd, who was detained by Canadian authorities at the request of US authorities, was granted bail by a Canadian judge on Wednesday.
Lam made the remarks before the weekly Executive Council meeting to dispel speculation over reports that Meng had three Hong Kong passports, according to China Global Television Network, the English-language arm of China's state broadcaster CCTV.
Lam said as far as the issuance of passports to Meng, all the procedures and arrangements were made according to law, CGTN reported.
She said normally the government would not comment on specific cases, but she decided to reveal the findings to "prevent ill-intentioned individuals" from using this incident to cause any harm that would affect SAR passport holders, the report said.
