Man detained for leaking whistleblower's info in luxury hotel hygiene scandal
A hotel manager in Shenzhen, south China’s Guangdong Province, has been put under a seven-day administrative detention for leaking the personal information of blogger Wu Dong, who posted an 11-minute video online exposing unhygienic practices at luxury hotels in China.
The man surnamed Peng, 42, has also been fined 500 yuan (US$73) for releasing the information in his WeChat groups, according to the Longhua branch of the Public Security Bureau in Shenzhen.
Peng has admitted to the crime, police said.
Wu alerted police in late December, saying his personal information was spread online.
The video uploaded on Wu's Weibo account in November shows cleaners wiping cups and sinks with dirty towels and sponges. Some used the same towel to wipe the toilet seat, while others could be seen soaking cups in shampoo.
The video had footage from 15 luxury hotels, seven of them from Shanghai.
Wu’s personal information was leaked and he received death threats after the exposure.
A sophomore student in Shenyang, capital of Liaoning Province, recently surrendered himself to police after sending death threats to Wu.
An employee of Sofitel Guiyang Hunter in China's southwestern Guizhou Province has apologized over "inappropriate remarks" that Wu should "be ready for any revenge and intimidation" as a result of his video.
