A young couple in Shenyang in northeast China's Liaoning Province show the true meaning of love in adversity.

The building where Li Shuo and Wang Xue live suddenly caught fire on February 28, Xinhua news agency reported on Monday.

Fleeing from the burning building, Li stayed behind his wife Wang to keep her safe. However, he was soon overcome by smoke and fainted.

Wang did not immediately notice her husband's absence, but when she did, she turned around without hesitation and ran back upstairs to search for him.

By that time, the building was in total darkness and filled with dense smoke. Wang didn't stop searching until she stumbled over her husband lying on the floor.

She helped him up and led him downstairs.

Descending from the seventh floor, clinging desperately one another, the couple still had to pass the fifth floor where the fire started.

Their exposed faces, hands and feet were seriously burned. Wang lost most of her hair.

When Li regained consciousness and saw his virtually bald wife in the hospital bed next to his, he could not help but cry. "Without her, I would no longer be part of this world."

The brave woman felt relieved and said, "It was touch and go whether we would get out alive, but we will cherish one another even more in the future... Neither of us will ever give up on each other."

The couple are receiving treatment in hospital and an investigation is underway.
