Man sentenced to death for killing 1, injuring 14 in Beijing shopping mall

A Beijing court Thursday sentenced a man to death for killing one and injuring 14 in a shopping mall in downtown Beijing last year.

Beijing No.2 Intermediate People's Court handed down the death penalty to Zhu Jiye, who was also deprived of political rights for life.

Zhu attacked people at the Joy City mall in the commercial area of Xidan, Xicheng District at around 1 p.m. on Feb. 11 last year, resulting in casualties, the court said in a verdict.

Police caught Zhu, who confessed to the attack and said he was motivated by personal grievances.

The court said it handed down a death penalty to Zhu as it was a planned, premeditated attack, and he attacked innocent people with prepared tools in a busy public place.
