Police launch investigation after viral domestic abuse post
Police in Chongqing have started an investigation after a video which appears to show a woman being attacked by her ex-boyfriend gained widespread attention online, China Central Television reported.
A 28-year-old woman, surnamed He, posted a video on her Weibo account on November 26, saying she was assaulted five times by her 44-year-old ex-boyfriend, surnamed Chen, over the past six months.
“I finally have the courage to speak out about the horrific things that happened to me. Although I am scared that he might seek revenge, I hope no one will ever be hurt or cheated by him,” He said in the post, which has been liked over 3.5 million times and shared more than 447,500 times as of 3pm Tuesday.
In a surveillance video which was also posted by the woman, Chen is seen grabbing He's feet and dragging her out of an elevator.
He claimed that after she attempted to run away, Chen chocked her, banged her head against a wall and insulted her on August 21.
The Women’s Federation in Chongqing has contacted He following the post, offering its help, CCTV reported.
In cases of domestic violence, a victim can report to the police and apply for a restraining order from the court, the women’s rights group said, according to the report.
Police said their investigation is ongoing.
