China announces most popular names of 2019

China on Monday announced the top 10 most popular full names and the top 50 most popular characters used in given names of 2019.

The list was released by the Ministry of Public Security in an annual report of Chinese names which analyzed the entire registered population of 1.4 billion people from the Chinese mainland.

Nearly 300,000 people, both men and women, share the name "Zhang Wei," making the name top the list in 2019. "Wang Wei" comes in a close second with a total of 287,101 people given the name.

"Li Na" ranks third on the list with over 270,000 people being given the name. There were 318 men named "Li Na," which is usually a name given to women.

The ministry also made public the most frequently used 50 characters in given names of the year. "Ying," which has the meaning of outstanding talents, is the most popular character in given names.
