Suzhou sends masks to sister city Venice
Suzhou gifted sister city Venice 20,000 masks to support its fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
The masks were flown from Shanghai to Milan on Wednesday before being delivered to their final destination.
Earlier this month, Suzhou Mayor Li Yaping wrote to his counterpart Luigi Brugnaro, saying: “Suzhou stands together with Venice in the fight against the pandemic.”
Venice and Suzhou established sister-city ties four decades ago.
On each of the 50 boxes containing the masks was written “La Cina e vicina” or "China is near." This is also the title of a 1967 Italian movie, although the phrase now represents Suzhou's efforts to contain the virus.
Meanwhile, Xiangcheng District in Suzhou has donated a total of 100,000 masks to support Recanati, a town in Marche, Italy, and Aichi Prefecture in Japan.
