January 27: Zhang Dingyu, president of Wuhan Jinyintan Hospital, one of the major battlefields of the epidemic, coordinates work in his hospital. Zhang, who is suffering amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and progressively losing his muscle strength, worked around the clock during the epidemic outbreak. Zhang's wife was diagnosed with the virus while working at another hospital in Wuhan and recovered later after treatment.

January 28: Zhong Nanshan in tears during a interview with Xinhua News Agency in Guangzhou when he said "Wuhan is a heroic city." Zhong, 83, a renowned respiratory specialist and an academician at the Chinese Academy of Engineering, was the head of the investigation team for the COVID-19 outbreak of the National Health Commission at the time.
