A 16-year-old male who assaulted a woman during Sunday's violence in Hong Kong was charged with riot and wounding, and appeared in court on Tuesday.

According to Hong Kong police, a woman was verbally abused and beaten up by several rioters when she was removing road barricades set by rioters in Tin Hau area in Causeway Bay on Sunday afternoon.

The rioters tried to flee the scene after assaulting the woman, but one of them, the 16-year-old male, was intercepted by the victim and reported to patrolling police officers.

The youngster was arrested by police and charged with riot and wounding after investigation.

He appeared in the Eastern Magistrates' Courts of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region on Tuesday for mention hearing. The magistrate adjourned the case to Friday.

A large number of rioters took part in unlawful assemblies and wreaked havoc in Hong Kong's Causeway Bay and Wan Chai areas on Sunday. They openly displayed slogans advocating "Hong Kong independence," blocked roads, vandalized public and private properties and brutally assaulted passers-by, leaving at least two people injured.

The police said on Monday they had arrested 193 people involved in Sunday's violent activities.
