Carrie Lam says will cancel her US visa over sanction

Chief Executive of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Carrie Lam on Saturday said she will cancel her US visa after Washington announced sanctions on her among 10 other Hong Kong officials.

"My visa to visit the US is valid until 2026. Since I don't want to visit this country, it seems that I can take the initiative to cancel it," she wrote in a Facebook post on Saturday.

The US on Friday imposed sanctions on 11 Hong Kong officials, including Carrie Lam and Luo Huining, director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR.

In the Facebook post, Lam questioned if the US had violated human rights by revealing personal information of the Chinese officials, including their passport numbers, addresses and ID card numbers.

"It is questionable whether there is any violation of the protection of human rights by handing over personal data which is for visa application to the financial department for purposes other than entry," she said.

She also mocked Washington for "casual and rough work" as it took the wrong address of her residence.
