Wenshan Zhuang and Miao Autonomous Prefecture in southwest Yunnan Province has released six new tourist routes centering on sports, health, nature and history in preparation for the upcoming eight-day National Day holiday, local authorities announced in Shanghai.

The routes will take tourists to the Puzhehei scenic area with its 54 lakes, karst peak forests, caves and wetlands. Visitors can also explore ethnic minority villages and appreciate the famed woodblock paintings of Maguan County.

They will also hear Poya Ge Shu, or the Poya Song Book, of the Zhuang ethnic group which uses simple pictograms and symbols written or painted on homespun to help people memorize ancient songs.

The routes allow tourists to experience the charming folk traditions and culture of Wenshan, county officials from the area said in Shanghai.

Since 1996, Shanghai has paired with eight counties in Wenshan in a national program to help them relieve poverty.

Wenshan officials are in Shanghai to attend training on tourism industry development. They also promoted Wenshan's rich tourism and local specialties like tea, coffee and rice in the city.

The prefecture contains a quite rugged landscape, and is home to tourist attractions such as the Puzhehei scenic area and Wenshan Natural Reserve.
