Six-women Indian Navy team embarks on historic voyage around globe
A team of six female officers of Indian Navy has set sail in the country's first attempt to circumnavigate the globe by an all-women crew.
The team on Sunday embarked on the adventurous journey on INSV Tarini, a 16.7-meter home-made sailing vessel that was inducted into Indian Navy earlier this year, from Goa port in western India.
The expedition was flagged off by Indian Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and they would return to Goa port in March next year after covering 21,600 nautical miles around the globe.
"This is a historic day for India. A historic day, which will be marked in navigation history and globally," Sitharaman said on the occasion.
"Our women are going to stand out for doing something which mostly wouldn't even have been thought of," she added.
The expedition is aimed at showcasing women empowerment in India.
