Spain's main opposition party, the Socialist party, agreed with the ruling People's Party that the Catalan regional government has to clarify whether there was a declaration of independence or not, the Socialist's leader Pedro Sanchez said on Wednesday.

In a press conference after a party meeting, Sanchez explained that "we share Rajoy's (Spanish Prime Minister) decision so that Puigdemont (president of Catalonia) clarifies what he said yesterday".

"We have always defended that our best way to defend the constitution is to reform it. Some aspects of territorial coexistence must be updated", he said, announcing that he had reached an agreement with Rajoy to reform the Spanish constitution.

Sanchez and Rajoy had a meeting on Tuesday night to address the political situation in Spain after Puigdemont proposed to suspend the effects of the declaration of independence a few weeks in order to open a process of dialogue.
