A shooting outside a nightclub in Australia's Victoria state capital Melbourne on Sunday morning left at least four people injured, with two victims in critical condition, police said.

An investigation is underway and the exact circumstances are still being established, according to a police statement.

The shooting occurred outside a nightclub near Little Chapel Street and Malvern Road about 3:20am local time in the Prahran inner suburb. A 28-year-old man and a yet to be identified man are both critical in hospital, police said, while a 50-year-old man and a 29-year-old man were both taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police urged people to avoid the area and anyone with information or footage of the incident were asked to contact authorities.
