Motive unknown yet for knife attack in Lyon, France
One person was killed and eight others wounded during a knife attack at a subway station near Lyon in southeast France on Saturday afternoon. The motive of the attack is unknown yet, according to authorities and media reports.
French BFM TV first said nine people were wounded but later revised the number to eight. Three of them are seriously wounded. The person who died was a 19-year-old man, according to the police.
A suspect has been taken into custody. The motive for the attack is unknown. French media said he is a 33-year-old asylum seeker from Afghanistan.
The attack took place at 4:30 p.m.local time (1530 GMT). Several people were attacked as they waited for a bus near the Laurent-Bonnevay metro station in Villeurbanne. Villeurbanne is located northeast of Lyon and forms part of the same metropolitan area.
The attacker was arrested after attempting to flee to the nearby metro station. There were reports of a second attacker being hunted by the police, but that has not been confirmed.
The French counter-terror office had been monitoring the situation but has not been asked to participate in the investigation.
"We have to wait for the conclusions of the investigation. As long as we do not have those conclusions, we can not say anything. We must remain very careful," said Lyon mayor Gerard Collomb.
